"May 11th - Editor's Note: The Luddite" by Brendan Sullivan
For a while I self identified as a Luddite. I took on this mantle after it was endorsed in a memoir by Kurt Vonnegut.
"May 18th - Editor's Note: The Half-Life" by Brendan Sullivan
Having spent the last week of the semester attached most unwillingly to a computer in the Hillman Library, taking measured cigarette breaks (every hour and a half, no more no less) on the first floor patio, I feel like I have absorbed a great deal of collegiate griping and moaning.
"May 20th - Defeating the Refrigerator" by Hilary Nykwest
Many of the ravenous interact with life in the same way they interact with their refrigerators. When hunger turns them desperate, they head for the refrigerator no matter how many times they've been disappointed before. The opening of the doors sends a swarm of hums pouring from the machine's engine as they mindlessly stare.
"June 3rd - The Cave" by Hilary Nykwest
"Say I go out to Staples to get some stuff for the office, and someone...finds me...and...kills me. How do we deal with accessing the server then?"
"June 8th - Editor's Note: Two Heads are Better than One" by Brendan Sullivan
I read a very interesting article a few days ago about Henry Roth's newest novel, An American Type, a book which only exists because of a young New Yorker fiction editor named Willing Davidson. Henry Roth, for his part, has been dead for 15 years.
"June 11th - Conversations with the Machine" by Hilary Nykwest
LOAD MEDIA!
Sure, I'll load some media, and you're going to take it. It helps when you tell the machine whose boss. You can't take shit from these bastards.
"June 16th - Letting Go" by Brendan Sullivan
In this column last week I tried to explore the role of an editor in relation to stories, novels, and all sorts of art. My jumping off point was the novel An American Type, by Henry Roth, posthumously edited and published by Willing Davidson of the New Yorker.
"June 17th - The Universal Fetter" by Hilary Nykwest
Donuts have an amazing affect on people. Every Wednesday the GoggleWorks staff is expected to attend the 10:00 am board meeting, and usually the only party of the meeting that excites is the donut pass-around.
"June 24th - What's In A Name?" by Hilary Nykwest
The world is full of liars. Deception can be a human's primary defense no matter the situation. Advertising in general is a matrix of lies.
"June 28th - Avatar, Avatar, Nobody Cares" by Brendan Sullivan
We are operating in a period of change for the written word. The Internet has come and things will never be the same. But I had something pointed out to me a few days ago that l think might put a chink in the wall of the Internet's overwhelming importance.
"July 1st - The Mayor" by Hilary Nykwest
He greets me with a crooked smile, a tip of the hat, and glazed eyes. His voice is raspy but soothing. It reminds me of Sam Elliott's voice, only blacker...much blacker. People need to eavesdrop on his conversations; his voice commands it.
"July 8th - The Criteria of Art" by Hilary Nykwest
There it was, rigidly sitting in the middle of the room. It had smooth corners and perfectly flat sides. It resembled a shiny white stick of butter, only glossier and cake unfriendly. The walls were white, lighting seemed florescent, and the floor was concrete.
"July 19th - You Did What You Had To Do" by Hilary Nykwest
"72 inches, 72 inches," I thought to myself. "So a nail every...18 inches? Jesus, this painting is six feet long. I've never hung a painting this large. Hell, I've never hung a painting without Lisa's help. Lisa's not here...shit. Is it even okay to nail something into this wall?
